The Experience on Mount Kinabalu : The Summit of Borneo

Mt Kinabalu, the majestic summit of Borneo is the focal point of the whole Sabah. Such is the importance of this mountain that the state capital Jesselton was renamed Kota Kinabalu in 1964. The highest mountain between the Himalayas and the Snow Mountains of Papua Barat (New Guinea Island), this magnificent granite massif stands at 4,095.2m (13,435 ft) tall. Fortunately, Mt Kinabalu is one of the easiest peaks in the world to conquer.

Earlier attempts to climb the mountain had been forbidden, as the locals believe it is to be a sacred ground,  a resting place for the spirits of their ancestors. Climbing the mountain would have disturbed these spirits and incurred their wrath. In 1851 when Sir Hugh Low (The peak was named after him later) led the expedition up the mountain, a compromise was reached with the locals to offer sacrifice to appease the spirits.

The name "Kinabalu" is derived from the Kasazandusun words "Aki Nabalu" where "Aki" literally means ancestor and "Nabalu" is mountain. Climers are advised to always behave respectfully and be on good behaviour.

One week has passed since our climb but I still feel deeply immersed with the experience and it's beauty. It was a life enriching trip indeed and I seriously think that one must come and do the climb at least once in the life time if health conditions permit.

Tinggi Tinggi Gunung Kinabalu
Tinggi Lagi Sayang Sama Kamu
Biru Biru Hujung Kinabalu
Tengok Dari Jauh Hati Saya Rindu

Sayang-sayang, Sayang Kinabalu,
Kaamatan Pesta Bulan Lima,
Sayang-sayang Kita Pergi Tamu,
Jalan Tamparuli Hati Saya Rindu.

When I was on my way down last week, I said this would be the first and the last time. But now I am missing it so much. No wonder you are going for the 3rd..
